What is plywood?
Plywood is a sheet building material used in general construction and furniture making. It is an engineered or man-made product, made by glueing thin layers of wood veneer, called ‘plies’, together. To manufacture plywood, the layers of plies are rotated up to 90 degrees to the previous layer and glued together with resin. Alternating the grain in manufacturing gives it several advantages over other wood products. First, it reduces the effects of expansion and shrinkage. Second, it improves the structural stability across the full dimension of the panel. And third, it reduces the likelihood of splitting when nailed at the edges. Most plywood is graded from A to D. An A grade is appearance grade and free from surface defects. Whereas a C/D grade has flaws and is generally used for structural applications.
Marine plywood
Marine ply has long been considered the king of plywood, and for good reason. It is constructed using the highest grade face and core veneers and manufactured from selected species based on their density, bending strength, impact resistance and surface finish. A high performing product, it is suitable when only the best product will do. However, none of the marine species is naturally durable, and preservative treatment is required in marine plywood used in many marine environments such as
boat hulls, pontoons and marine applications. These mixed hardwood veneers can range in colour from a deep red to a light pale blonde. We supply marine plywood Melbourne wide and throughout Australia from our Melbourne distribution center and manufacturing facility.
