Tricoya® Acetylated MDF is the only MDF genuinely rated for permanent exterior use, delivering Class 1 durability and exceptional dimensional stability for outdoor and wet environment applications. Resistant to rot, fungal decay, and termite attack, Tricoya® virtually eliminates swelling, warping, and biological breakdown while maintaining the workability of standard MDF.

Also known as acetylated MDF or exterior-grade MDF, Tricoya® is manufactured from acetylated wood fibres using the same proven technology as Accoya solid timber. The acetylation process permanently modifies wood fibres at the molecular level, replacing moisture-absorbing hydroxyl groups with stable acetyl groups to prevent water absorption at the cellular level. With Accoya proving this technology in exterior applications since 2007, Tricoya® delivers that same performance in a versatile panel form.

Backed by a 50-year above-ground warranty and 25-year in-ground warranty, Tricoya® is ideal for facade cladding, outdoor kitchens, external doors, wet interior areas including bathrooms and pool surrounds, signage, and any application where traditional MDF would fail.

Features

  • Class 1 durability - resistant to rot, fungal decay, and termites
  • Dimensionally stable - dramatically reduced swelling and shrinking
  • 50-year warranty above ground - 25 years in-ground contact
  • Works like standard MDF - same tools, machining, and finishing methods
  • Ideal for coating - suits painting, laminating, and veneering
  • Low maintenance - extended periods between recoating
  • FSC® certified - sustainably sourced from certified forests
  • No added formaldehyde - NAF and E0 compliant

Important notice: All wood-based panels are by nature potentially subject to bowing, cupping or warping following application of veneer. Read our panel manufacturing guidelines to learn more.

Material: Acetylated Medium Density Fibreboard (Tricoya MDF)

Durability: Class 1 (EN 350-2) - resistant to rot, fungal decay, and termites

Dimensional stability: Less than 2% thickness swell after 24-hour water immersion

Density: 720 kg/m³ (6-12mm), 700 kg/m³ (15-18mm)

Finish: 120-grit sanded, ready for priming, painting, laminating, or veneering

Warranty: 50 years above ground, 25 years in-ground contact

Recommended applications: Facade cladding, outdoor kitchens, external doors, window components, wet interior areas (bathrooms, pool surrounds, laundries), signage, fascia and soffits, outdoor furniture, sound barriers.

Workability: Cuts, routes, machines, and fastens with standard woodworking tools. No specialist equipment required.

Fastener requirements: Stainless steel 304 minimum. Use 316 stainless steel in coastal or marine environments. Do not use galvanised, carbon steel, or zinc-coated fasteners.

Adhesive requirements: D4 class adhesives for exterior use including polyurethane (PU), epoxy, and EPI. PVA is not suitable for external applications.

Finishing: Seal all edges and machined surfaces with end grain sealer. Water-based paint systems can be used. Avoid calcium carbonate (chalk-filled) paints.

Fire rating: Class C flame spread (ASTM E84)

Storage: Store flat on level, dry bearers at maximum 800mm centres. Keep elevated 100mm above concrete floors or 300mm above ground. Store undercover and allow panels to acclimatise before installation.

Sheet Weight (Approx):

Sheet Size 6mm 9mm 12mm 15mm 18mm

3050 × 1220 - - - - 51 kg

Important information:

  • Stainless steel fasteners are mandatory. Contact with carbon steel, galvanised, or zinc-coated metals will cause corrosion and staining. Use 304 stainless minimum, 316 for coastal areas.
  • Surface coating is optional for durability. Uncoated panels will weather and grey over time. Scratches or chips to painted surfaces will not void the panel warranty.
  • Install cladding with ventilated cavity. Allow airflow behind exterior cladding applications to ensure optimal performance.
