Tricoya Extreme Exterior MDF
Description
Description
Tricoya® Acetylated MDF is the only MDF genuinely rated for permanent exterior use, delivering Class 1 durability and exceptional dimensional stability for outdoor and wet environment applications. Resistant to rot, fungal decay, and termite attack, Tricoya® virtually eliminates swelling, warping, and biological breakdown while maintaining the workability of standard MDF.
Also known as acetylated MDF or exterior-grade MDF, Tricoya® is manufactured from acetylated wood fibres using the same proven technology as Accoya solid timber. The acetylation process permanently modifies wood fibres at the molecular level, replacing moisture-absorbing hydroxyl groups with stable acetyl groups to prevent water absorption at the cellular level. With Accoya proving this technology in exterior applications since 2007, Tricoya® delivers that same performance in a versatile panel form.
Backed by a 50-year above-ground warranty and 25-year in-ground warranty, Tricoya® is ideal for facade cladding, outdoor kitchens, external doors, wet interior areas including bathrooms and pool surrounds, signage, and any application where traditional MDF would fail.
Features
- Class 1 durability - resistant to rot, fungal decay, and termites
- Dimensionally stable - dramatically reduced swelling and shrinking

Sheet Weight (Approx):
| Sheet Size | 6mm | 9mm | 12mm | 15mm | 18mm |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2440 × 1220 | 13.5 kg | 20 kg | 27 kg | 34 kg | 41 kg |
| 3050 × 1220 | - | - | - | - | 51 kg |
Important information:
- Stainless steel fasteners are mandatory. Contact with carbon steel, galvanised, or zinc-coated metals will cause corrosion and staining. Use 304 stainless minimum, 316 for coastal areas.
- Surface coating is optional for durability. Uncoated panels will weather and grey over time. Scratches or chips to painted surfaces will not void the panel warranty.
- Install cladding with ventilated cavity. Allow airflow behind exterior cladding applications to ensure optimal performance.

What is Accoya Wood?
Tricoya® MDF is manufactured using the same acetylation technology proven on Accoya solid timber since 2007. The process permanently modifies wood fibres at the molecular level, replacing moisture-absorbing hydroxyl groups with stable acetyl groups. The result is Class 1 durability, exceptional stability, and a 50+ year service life.
Acetylation uses acetic anhydride, derived from acetic acid (the key component of vinegar), making it non-toxic and environmentally safe. The timber is FSC® certified, 100% recyclable, and locks carbon away for decades.

Tricoya FAQ's
What is the difference between Tricoya and MR MDF?
What is the difference between Tricoya and MR MDF?
MR MDF (Moisture Resistant) is designed for humid interior environments like kitchens and bathrooms, but will still swell and fail if exposed to water or used outdoors. Tricoya is the only MDF rated for permanent exterior use. It can be fully exposed to weather, rain, and even ground contact. Tricoya carries a 50-year warranty above ground. MR MDF has no exterior warranty.
How long will Tricoya last?
How long will Tricoya last?
Tricoya is backed by a 50-year warranty above ground and 25-year warranty in-ground contact. Independent testing by BRE (Building Research Establishment) indicates a 60+ year expected service life in exterior applications.
Can Tricoya be used outdoors without coating?
Can Tricoya be used outdoors without coating?
Yes. Tricoya's durability comes from the acetylation process, not from coatings. Uncoated panels will weather and grey over time (similar to untreated timber), but the panel itself will not rot, decay, or lose structural integrity. Coating is recommended for aesthetics and UV protection, but is not required for durability. All cut edges and machined surfaces should still be sealed.
Can Tricoya be used in bathrooms and wet areas?
Can Tricoya be used in bathrooms and wet areas?
Yes. Tricoya is ideal for wet interior areas including bathrooms, laundries, pool surrounds, and changing rooms. Its dimensional stability means it won't swell or warp in high-humidity environments.
Is Tricoya suitable for ground contact?
Is Tricoya suitable for ground contact?
Yes. Tricoya is warranted for 25 years in ground contact and freshwater immersion. It has proven termite resistance in Australian field trials, outperforming spotted gum, merbau, and western red cedar against Coptotermes in Northern Territory testing.
Can I use standard woodworking tools on Tricoya?
Can I use standard woodworking tools on Tricoya?
Yes. Tricoya cuts, routes, machines, and fastens exactly like standard MDF. No specialist equipment is required. Carbide-tipped tools are recommended for general use; diamond-tipped for high-volume production.
What adhesives are compatible with Tricoya?
What adhesives are compatible with Tricoya?
D4 class exterior adhesives including polyurethane (PU), epoxy, and EPI are suitable for Tricoya. PVA is not recommended for external applications.
