What is plywood?
Plywood is a sheet building material used in general construction and furniture making. It is an engineered or man-made product, made by glueing thin layers of wood veneer, called ‘plies’, together. To manufacture plywood, the layers of plies are rotated up to 90 degrees to the previous layer and glued together with resin. Alternating the grain in manufacturing gives it several advantages over other wood products. First, it reduces the effects of expansion and shrinkage. Second, it improves the structural stability across the full dimension of the panel. And third, it reduces the likelihood of splitting when nailed at the edges. Most plywood is graded from A to D.
