Timber Veneer Backing & Matching Options
Backing Options for Timber Veneer Panels
We offer several backing options for our timber veneer panels to suit different applications and budgets. Understanding these options will help you select the right specification for your project.
DGB (Downgrade Back) - Standard Option
DGB stands for "Downgrade Back" and refers to panels where the front face is premium quality A-grade veneer, while the back side uses a lower grade veneer of the same species as the face that may contain some defects or colour variation. This is our standard backing option and provides a cost-effective solution while maintaining a consistent veneer appearance on both sides of the panel, making it suitable for applications where the back may occasionally be visible but doesn't require premium appearance.
Important Specifications for DGB Panels
- Premium side orientation: The premium (face) side is always delivered face-up in our packs for easy identification and handling.
- Sanding: Both faces are lightly sanded to 150 Grit with the face taking priority. Finish sanding is required during fabrication.
- Machining and cutting: Always verify you are cutting and processing the premium (face-up) side. Plan your cuts carefully before machining. Sheets cannot be replaced if the wrong side has been machined or cut.
G2S (Good Two Sides)
G2S stands for "Good Two Sides" and indicates that both the front face and back side have premium A-grade veneer applied. When ordering matching G2S panels, the premium face side is sequence-matched across all sheets (where possible), while the backs are generally not matched and may vary from sheet to sheet. Standard G2S is ideal for high-end wardrobes and cabinets where the interior may be seen. For applications like open bookshelves or floating shelves where both sides are prominently displayed, we recommend front and back sequence matching (see below).
Important Specifications for G2S Panels
- Premium side orientation: The premium (face) side is always delivered face-up in our packs for easy identification and handling.
- Matching priority: When matching is selected, sequence matching applies to the face side only. We prioritise sequence matching on the premium face side to ensure your visible surfaces have the best appearance.
- Back side characteristics: The back side meets the same A-grade specification as the face. However, the back may show different grain patterns compared to the face side, as matching priority is given to the premium face.
- Projects requiring front and back sequence matching: If you require sequence matching on both sides of your panels, please contact us before placing your order. Front and back sequence matching availability depends on veneer species and panel quantity.
BAMO (Back at Manufacturer's Option)
BAMO stands for "Back at Manufacturer's Option" and refers to panels where the back side treatment is left to our discretion. BAMO panels are ideal for applications where the back side is never visible, such as wall panelling.
No Back
Veneer is applied to one side only, with no backing material. Note that No Back panels are highly susceptible to warping, bowing and cupping due to moisture imbalance between the veneered face and the bare substrate. Panels must be stored horizontally with even weight distribution to maintain flatness pre-fabrication.
Sheet Matching Options
In addition to selecting a backing option, you can choose whether your sheets are sequence-matched or non-matching. This applies to all backing types.
Matching Sheets
The face side is sequence-matched across all sheets in your order, creating consistent grain flow. This is perfect for projects requiring a cohesive appearance such as kitchen cabinets, feature walls, or any application where multiple panels will be visible together. When you order matching sheets, we carefully select and arrange veneer leaves in sequence to ensure the grain pattern flows naturally from one panel to the next.
Non-Matching Sheets
Panels are pulled from stock and will not sequence match between sheets. While each sheet maintains the same quality grade, the grain patterns will vary from sheet to sheet. This option is suitable for small furniture projects, single-sheet applications, or situations where panels won't be viewed together.
